Honor your talent

Fleming St in Bloom
oil on canvas
©Maggie Ruley 2015

I had some customers in the studio the other day who expressed great surprise that I wouldn't be in the studio on Wednesday because I would be in a painting class.  Why would I chose to take a class when I have a certain skill level and a great place to use those skills?  Good question. The answer is because one way I can honor my talent, honor my customers and fans, and honor my students (Yeah, that's right, I teach classes now-more on that another time) is to be always in a state of learning.  Most often I learn from my mistakes, but it's really great to learn from other artists. So, in the month of April, I have been taking a plein air oil painting class from Mike Rooney.  Mike is from North Carolina, spends winters painting in Key West and part of the summer painting in Cape Cod and Maine.

It's lovely this time of year in Key West and the Bougainvillea in morning sunlight was right in my own Fleming St. neighborhood was irresistible.

Using oil paints is not my greatest skill set, that makes this class a challenge. We don't get to be better painters doing the things we are good at over and over. Mike does a great job of giving us instruction and I'm enjoying the class. Here is his painting set up, simple and functional, along with his system of finding correct values in sun and shadow.

On a final note I want to thank everyone who stuck by me when my blog was hacked and those of you who have patiently waited for me to decide it was safe to post again.  You are the best! And I want to thank this blog that helped me solve the problem.

After all the palm tree lagoons I have painted it is hard to believe that I still have 2 more starts left to finish. There is one more start I definitely want to work on, the other may just have to bide its time until the next challenge.

Sunset and palms, day 14, 30 day challenge

Sunset and Palms, oil on paper, 6 x 8"
day 14, 30 day challenge
$40 ©2013 Maggie Ruley
I am half way through the challenge and today I had to play catch up in order to have 7 paintings this week.  Tomorrow some time in the afternoon I will have the drawing for the painting give away so leave a comment if you have time.

When I realized I was a day behind in the challenge all of the palm tree starts I had been fussing about became a blessing.  I had a lot of framing to do today and still wanted to catch up with the group.  So I grabbed 2 of the palm tree starts and my oil paints and gave my self a time limit of 40 minutes each.  This is the second of today's 2 paintings. To see more of the challenge paintings click here.
And read below to find out how to enter the drawing for this week's give away

Keepin' it real - almost

This lovely bunch of coconuts was painted a couple of weeks ago and has been at the printers have its picture made, so giclee prints are available of this image. I call this style "contemporary realism". It is a studio painting from a photo I took of a palm tree in my neighborhood. The punched up color and the graphic black edges in some areas were deliberate choices to create some visual excitement. The one thing I don't want you to be when you look at my work is bored!

The edge of paradise

The compostion of this painting breaks a lot of "rules". The inverted triangle shape created by the palms is almost smack dab in the middle of the canvas and the right palm is leaning and drawing the viewers eye out of the picture frame. I decided to emphasize the uneasy-ness of the palms by painting them in strong hot colors that are the opposite of the very plain and calm background. I find the tension between the foreground and the background visually compelling. Let's hope the gallery visitors think the same.

Painting on Paper

SOLD

I really should be working on clay pieces but the studio has been really cold and I have had a hard time working with wet hands. So I have had short spans of clay work and short spans of painting. I have been working with acrylic paints on paper. There are a couple of palm tree landscapes in the works, this one, "Sunrise Palms", is the only one finished. I like the way the light is coming toward the viewer. In real life when this happens it is very hard to see the objects in front of the light. But I don't worry too much about reality.

The image is 11" x 14" and it is matted to 16' x 20"

"Sunrise Palms" $195.00

I'm taking it into the gallery (7 Artists Key West) tomorrow.

PAINTINGS WITH TEXTURE AND DIMENSION

A couple of weeks ago I was experimenting with some Golden products I had received in one of their educational workshops given at the Key West Art Center. I coated the canvas with light molding paste so that there was a texture on the canvas. When that was dry I started my grid based composition in the turquoise and red color scheme I seem to favor these days. I worked the background until I thought it was almost finished. Then I used a stencil to add a thick layer of molding paste in a palm shape. Then that had to dry overnight. Then I started to paint the palms and finish the background work. There are four of these in all and they make a nice grouping. I did a larger one but I forgot to texture the background and it isn't as interesting. I also think painting the edging strips works really well on these pieces.

PAINTING WITH BIG STICKS

I haven't been very happy with my paintings lately so I keep experimenting with different ideas and techniques to keep myself interested. Yesterday I attached small tree branches from the sea grape tree in my yard to my paint brushes. This in not my idea. This idea comes from California painter Robert Burridge. The canvas surface is flat (rather than verticle on an easel) on a low table. The extra long handled brushes make it hard for the painter to have total controll over the paint strokes. This technique keeps the work loose and impressionistic. Notice the canvas isn't stretched. I have just clipped it to a large board. And the canvas isn't primed. For some reason I really like the look and feel of painting on on unprimed canvas. Because I am using acrylic paintings this isn't a problem. Oil paint has to go on primed canvas or the solvents used will eat into the canvas fibers.
Here is the painting a little further along. The red under painting is slowly getting covered. I won't cover it all. A little red peeking through adds excitement. I am not sure how this painting will end up, but using new techniques is very exciting. By the way this painting is large, 24"x36"
